rap daze

This posting is gonna be about some of the rap artists I have been listening to lately. I noticed that I have been writing a lot about math rock and EDM so I need to shake things up.

1. Hopsin

Marcus Jamal Hopson AKA Hopsin is a Rapper hailing from California and Los Angeles that is BOOMING. Born in 1985 this man has been rapping and skateboarding since he was a teenager. He is a music producer, director, actor, and editor. Hopsin has a stacked repertoire of music videos and lyrics with real meaning. Some of Hopsins influences include SwizZz, Dizzy Wright, and DJ Hoppa. This guys has the CRAZIEST contacts. He is probably a vampire.

Reminds me of Tech N9ne, Jarren Benton, YelaWolf

 2.  Pro Era, Capital Steez, and Joey Bada$$

Progressive Era is an American hip hop group from Brooklyn, New York City that includes over 45 different people. Pro Era was started in 2009 and aimed to set the new standard in hip hop music. Capital Steez and Joey Bada$$ were long time friends and they made their dreams come true. Unfortunately, on December 24, 2012, Capital STEEZ committed suicide at the age of 19. Such a waste of talent. Although he has passed Pro Era and Joey continue to work today to honour his name. Capital STEEZ was a freaking titan with the hugest chops.

Capital STEEZ's work is available for free at:

http://theproera.com/, you can download his work on the albums AMERIKKKAN KORRUPTION, PEEP the APOCALYPSE and other ProEra albums for free.

 3. Flatbush Zombies

The Flatbush Zombies are another rap group from Brooklyn that was created in 2010. Consisting of Meechy Darko, Zombie Juice and Erick "Arc" Elliott, these three rappers are a part of the east coast hip hop revival. So far they have released two albums, D.R.U.G.S. and BetterOffDead, and after releasing their Youtube video for Thug Waffle, have gained a mountain full of support. The Flatbush Zombies are are definitely part of the new wave- less jazz based production and more sporadic samples. They have collaborated with Joey Bada$$, ASAP crew, RZA, and Juicy J.

They remind me of: OFWGKTA, The Underachievers, Danny Brown

4. Black Star

Usually when I write about artists, I try finding very recent or artists that are still getting hyped. Once in a while I like writing about older groups, groups that people may have forgotten about. This next post is about the legendary hip hop group Black Star. Black Star was created in 1997 by hip hop stars Talib Kweli and Mos Def. Although Black Star only released one full album and a couple of singles, this album is well worth getting to know due to how prolific it's contributors a
re. The album's lyrics are heavy, they discuss their views on politics at the time, the death of Tupac and Biggie, and the state of hip hop as they see it. Their album, Mos Def and Talib Kweli Are Blackstar reinforced th
eir talents and gave them either wider coverage for their own solo careers.

Reminds me of: Tribe Called Quest, Gang Starr,

5. Madlib and Quasimoto

Otis Jackson Jr., Commonly known as Madlib, was born October 24, 1973 in California. As the son of musicians Madlib was exposed to music all his life. As he grew older Madlib started producing music for his friends. Madlib has heavy jazz influences and loves experimenting. Madlib also produces and performs under the stage name Quasimoto. I actually found out about Quasimoto first. The album 'The Unseen' has probably the oddest arrangement of rap samples I have ever heard.

 6. MF DOOM, KMD, and Madvillain

How could I write about rap without talking about MF DOOM? Born January 1971 in the UK, Daniel Dumile is one of the most prominent underground hip hop artists on our planet. When Daniel moved to NYC he formed the group Kausing Much Damage (KMD) consisting of his brother DJ Subroc and Rodan, under the stage name Zev Love X. When his brother was killed in an accident Daniel dropped out of the rap scene for a few years. When he emerged Daniel changed his stage name to MF DOOM. He is iconic as he rocks a Doctor Doom mask when he performs. His songs are full of heavy hooks,
jazzy twists, and bleak bits. MF Doom has collaborated with Madlib as the rap duo Madvillain.

7. ANTZ ONE

Alright I gotta end today's long ass post with some native talent. I first found out about the Toronto based rap group ANTZ ONE from my friend from high school. This friend films their videos and skateboards right along with them. These guys rhymes are chillllllllll. There is no better way to describe them. They hit their word's HARD. Their production is done by DjazzWizards. When you come back from school or work tonight, crack open a beer, roll up a fat blunt, and sit in your comfiest chair. If you blast some ANTZ ONE you'll be in heaven. Peace.

alright my hommies know whats good but for the rest of you enthusiests imma show you some NINTENDOCORE

1. Iamerror
Today I'm going to talk about a genre that neeeds some more coverage. Everytime you've ever played a video game there was usually some cool head-boppin chune that usually came with it, right? Today I'm gonna talk about NINTENDOCORE. Nintendocore is electronically produced music that uses samples from video games, and is often times influenced by metal song structures.

In grade 9 my friend Sam was like 'yo check out this dude he's pretty sick'. So I did and here I am 5 dreadful years later talking about IAMERROR.

Iamerror lasted from 2006-2009 which was the conglomeration of a guitarist, producer, and vocalist. They gave birth to their album Trout Yogurt which spurned them to tour across the U.S. Iamerror is now dissolved into two group: Monomate and Apparatus. These two friends decided to part ways to lead their own interests. However, before doing so they left the world with the most heart pounding, sentimental, nostalgic, mind numbing music known to man kind.

Check their bio, music and their new pages out at :
https://www.facebook.com/monomatemusic
https://soundcloud.com/monomate
https://www.facebook.com/pages/apparatus/128053033902153

reminds me of: super smash broz, legend of zelda, sonic, kirby, Gorgoroth, Old skool Underoath

2. Insert Disc

Not a lot is known about Insert Disc because he likes to keep a low profile. I am impressed by him because on his last .fm page he says:

“Named changed to Dr. Drank.”
- Heyzeus

Never commercialize yourself and keep the trill shit.

Band Members: Heyzeus

Influences: Passion
Sounds Like: a Wind Waker recital.

What a whimsical dude...anyways. If you are looking for some more nintendocore this manz in the way to go.This guy LOVES bass drum pedals, a lot. Sometimes his music seems like it doesn't make sense but you have to get past the weird syncopation and the random blast beats you'll become one with the sound.~~~~~~

reminds me of: my childhood and early adolescence, oh, and happy hardcore

3. 100DEADRABBITS

100DEADRABBITS is from Orange County, California where the skies are blue and the babes and peachy. They say that they are video game influenced, electronic murder music and consists of Robert Robinson, Erick Lopez, Eduardo Ruelas, Steve Lamas, Emilio Pacheco and Will Eudave. I like these guys because they are a bit less non-stop/ metal than Iamerror and Insert Disc but they definitely still have their own groove to them.

reminds me of: children of bodom, the OC, Borgore, Diamond Kid, Breathe Carolina, 1800Zombie

why Sly Why?

Sly Why defines themselves as a hip/hop/rap, jazz, progressive and electronic group based in Toronto. Members include: Victor Xu - MC/Keys., Connor Chan - MC/Guitar, Cam Fraser - Bass
Austin Hargreaves - Drums/Sample. Their 7 track album entitled 'When the Love Song Happened and You Didn't Know it Did showcases these musicians talents across the field. It is refreshing to hear a live band playing with so many samples while keeping the old tradition alive. They played at Sydicate Fest and have played with the likes of Bulletproof Tiger.

If you guys like: Portishead, UNKLE, Medeski, Martin, and Wood, XXYYXX you gotta check these new champs out.

POLARIS

Today at midnight Mr. Vlad Polaris dropped his new e.p, BRIGHT EYES. Polaris is a Toronto based producer who specializes at dropping drum and bass and doobstep all over peoples faces. This up and comer has been spinning at raves for years now, and can be seen playing low key shows around Toronto. Check out DubHub Toronto, as he is consistently playing there. His new EP is full of bright sounds, pounding drums, and high frequencies.

Ive been trill but Im back with BOB GRAVITY

OKAY so I have only one final exam left so I have no more excuses for my inactivity. Today's first post will be on Bob Gravity. A friend of mine from New York introduced me to his friend's work and it is chillingly good. Bob Toole, aka Bob Gravity is a thumpin' house dj and producer. Although he isn't very well established yet this kid has talent and the drive to succeed. Also he kinda looks like Porter Robinson.

Reminds me of: Lee Walker, Klepto, Seth Troxler

MoTez

Motez is hands down the slickest producer I've heard in a while. Motez definitely has an impressive selection of music samples in his productions- stellar vocalists, chill head bobbing bass line/keyboard combos, and drums that don't stop. Motez was born in Baghdad but as of late he has been in Australia. I usually play the music of the person I am writing about while writing the blog posts and
his music is making my neck hurt from all the head bobbing...can't resist it. DEFINITELY gotta give this fellow a listen as he's gonna be riding the gravy train for years to come. Peace~

reminds me of: Maya Jane Coles, Eyerer and Namito, Simian Mobile Disco, Blawan

damn son its Outerspacerz??

This group that I'm going to talk about today has a pretty interesting history. Two of the members of Toronto electro/hip-hop/grime group Outerspacerz are from the progressive metal band Speak of the Devil. Back in highschool these dudes shredded like no other in this jam packed, tiny ass venue called the Siesta Nouveux. Outerspacerz has only one thing on their agenda, to make y'all dance. Make sure you guys reach all their bandcamp, where you can set the price on their brand new EP!

These guy's remind me of Benny Benassi, LMFAO, Kavinsky, Die Antwoord
